Yellow Split Mung Dal Soup


1 cup yellow split mung dal

6-7 cups water

1 tsp salt

1 tsp oil or ghee

¼ tsp mustard seeds

¼ tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp finely grated ginger

¼ tsp turmeric powder

1 to 1 ½ tsp Dal spice mix

1 tsp finely chopped fresh cilantro or parsley

7 - 8 curry leaves

Serves 4-5


  1. Wash  yellow split mung dal with plenty  of water

  2. In a heavy bottom pot take 7 cups of cold water, add washed yellow split mung dal into it.

  3. On high heat bring this mixture to a boil. Remove foam from the surface.

  4. Let it cook on medium heat for 30-45 minutes. Add salt at the end of cooking.

  5. Heat oil or ghee in a small skillet.

  6. Add mustard seeds and wait until they pop.

  7. Next add cumin seeds and curry leaves

  8. Sauté on low heat for ½ min.

  9. Add ginger and turmeric powder.

  10. In 1 teaspoon dal spice mix add some water to make a paste

  11. Add this paste into ghee & spice mixture, stir well & sauté for ½ minute.

  12. Pour this mixture into the cooked yellow split mung dal which is already prepared.

  13. Bring it to a boil on high heat so that the spices in ghee can get mixed well into dal.

  14. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro or parsley.


Add finely chopped tomatoes (1/2 cup) in step 2 just before adding dal spice mix paste.
